XT2 made me laugh

First time on the bike today for two months when I took it for its MOT. It was cold. Very cold, but dry. And the heated jacket was working well.

I knew where I was going but quickly entered 4 via points into a route, to check headphone, phone and satnav were working.

Instructions came through ok. Then I decided I wanted to stay out a bit longer, so ignored the route. It asked me to go back once and then went quiet, but still kept recalculating the route.

I wondered if this was what the XT2 does now, but I tried to play some music. No music through headset. No instructions
I stopped a couple of times, resetting BT, Re-pairing the devices. All connections were showing on the XT2 screen, but still no sound from the XT2 through the headset. I gave up and decided to sort it out at home.
5 mins later I got a speed limit warning ping through the headset.
Oh, hello, where have you been
It responded by demanding a U turn
Then another, and another.
Here we go again - but the screen was not showing any of this.
Take 3rd exit at the roundabout
What roundabout ? There wasn't one on the road, nor on the map.

Then it said turn left onto A682.

Ok, this made sense. I turned left onto the A682 half an hour ago.

This was followed by about 10 minutes of instructions which I realised were the instructions that it should have given while it was being quiet. One after the other. No pauses.
Eventually it caught up with the last turn that I made, after which all was well again.

Its as if someone had stuck their thumb over the BT pipeline, and when they let go, it all came gushing out , one after the other.

I can't report this. I don't know what I did to stop it from working, or what I did to make it work again.
But out of all of the odd things that the XT2 does, this one made me crack out laughing !

I hear you. You could either laugh, or throw the damn thing. It's surprising that the audible signals accumulated, as if in some sort of queue.
We're all waiting with bated breath to hear how much time you spend trying to figure out what happened, and more importantly, what you figure out.

I'm not putting any effort into that.

Something caused the BT connection to break - or maybe it thought that a phone call was in progress I've been fiddling on and off with XT1, XT2, Cardo headset, and phone over the last few months. I have also got a new phone. The problem happened after setting off. Maybe the phone was connected to the Cardo - which it shouldn't be in my setup.

If it happens again, I'll start to take notice. Focus on what happened before the sound stopped, and write it down. Try to stumble across the cause, rather than putting any effort into it. But I will break all BT connections with everything and rebuild them before going out again.

This was the first time that I have been out with the handlebar controller, and the new phone. I cannot easily disconnect the handlebar controller. But I can put the XT2 in the XT1 cradle if it happens again which is essentially the same thing. The XT1 cradle is still mounted on my bike.

One odd thing. Im sure that in BT connections I used to see phone AND the headset listed. Yesterday I saw only phone. Yet the headset was already listed with its connections when I selected 'Add a Headset'. I'll see if I have any old screenshots.

Got to take the wheels in for new tyres tomorrow, so today I need to take the wheels off the bike.

I did the recent maps and unit update and first time out with it there were straight lines all over the place when I asked it to do a short route. Turned it off, then back on and it seems to have calmed down to its "normal" self.

The most important thing is that we all send a complaint to Garmin so that they can solve all the problems as soon as possible. They work by the number of complaints on each problem

I did have this happen to me, only once, several months ago with the XT2. I have no idea what the cause was.
I probably had my Sena headset and Samsung phone connected. I probably did not have Tread on the phone, but its possible.
I do not have the handlebar controller.

Not much help, I know, but at least you are not alone with the experience.
I'll pay more attention if it ever happens again.

My XT2 said "Turn left in 74 miles", I thought that was a bit premature.
I often give my via points odd/silly names just to see how it pronounces them, helps break up the journey.

I have the same problem but with music. Sometimes Spotify music speeds up a bit, and other times it has small interruptions.

The XT2. Living up to its reputation, as a completely unreliable NAV unit ...

Well - first decent ride for about 3 months. (I don't count taking it for an MOT)...

I wiped my XT2 out completely. Complete system reset.
I installed Tread on phone and on XT2 - but having just reset it, I get the option to select whether or not to allow data to be stored (in the Explore database). The answer was no.
I loaded it with one of my test routes that I used for teasing out the issues when deviating from the route (and the XT and XT2 displaying the RUT symptoms). This was create in Basecamp mainly with Waypoints set as Vias and a couple of adhoc points (drag and drop), both set as shaping.
I copied the route using the XT2 copy facility - which makes the XT2 think that it has not been imported.
I had a Via Point early on in the route so that I could skip it - this has the efefct of making the XT2 recalculate the whole route (and which is one of the things that will trigger RUT behaviour when deviating from a route that has been imported).
I had a track of the route so that I knew where the original BC route had been plotted.
And I rode the route.

TRead was linked, and could display traffic, roadworks, weather etc. But it could not sync with the Explore / Tread database.
All Via points had kept the names that I gave (but I had created them as Waypoints, and that makes a difference)

I noted a couple of places where the XT2 had calculated a slightly different route - and one where it made a major alteration - legitimately - because the XT2 belived that to be the faster route.

And I rode the route following my original plan.

And the places where I deviated, the XT2 recalculated immediately the direction that I had chosen to ride.
It didn't get into RUT behaviour. It didn't calculate any unexpected routes - and where it tried to take me a direction I didn't want to go - this was because that way was faster. IT gave in and navigated me ahead much sooner than the XT had done on the same test.

None of this was a surprise to me. I knew how the XT2 behaved, and I knew that I could stop it misbehaving. I had tested things partly on the road and partly as simulation. But this was the first time that I had performed a complete route test that was a repeat of something that I had done many times in different circumsatces with the XT1.

And I have to say - on this testroute (where there are few faster roads nearby except one) the XT2 behaved impeccably and better than the XT1.

But you have to jumpt through the hoops to get it like this.
