Wi-Fi: Any purpose besides updates?

Post by Peobody »

I have not connected my XT to the wifi in my new home and am wondering if there is any reason to considering I don't do updates via wifi. Is there any other reason to connect it?

I find it very helpful for letting me know that a new time zone map for Kazakhstan is available (seriously, that was this morning's "alert").

I have not found any useful function, though I seem to recall it can be more reliable for downloading new maps to the XT if you have good WiFi and a fast connection.

Oh crap, I missed that. I guess I better turn wifi on.

I think I will stay with connecting it to Garmin Express every couple of months, or when I see a post about a new U.S. map.

You're right about wifi appearing to be the preferred update method but I had a bad experience with a map update done by wifi so have avoided it ever since.

When the 2026.1 map update came out I thought I'd go ahead and allow the XT to do the map update itself over wifi. It started off and its time estimate crept up from 4 hours to 16+ hours, so I left it overnight. In the morning it had increased to 32 hours. So I plugged it in to my mac instead and it took about 40 minutes to both download the update and install it onto the XT.

The other fun part of the XT's wifi is that the device will freeze if it's at the edge of a weak wifi signal. I discovered this when I took it outside to put it on the bike and it wouldn't respond in any way. My wifi from inside the house is still barely visible but not usable outside, but the XT I guess tried to use it and locked up. It wouldn't start up or even respond to screen touches until I brought it back inside or turned off wifi. So it stays off.
