UPDATE: On the dead touch screen ...
Garmin Australasia has agreed to send me a "new" refurbished unit with a new 12 month warranty.
The piss off is, that there is no way to transfer all the routes I had planned for a 9 day adventure on the "dead screen XT2" onto the refurbished unit they are sending me.
If your screen ever goes dead like my mine, even the Garmin Tech Heads can't access the unit!
I had spent MANY hours planing the routes by using just the route planner on the XT2 home screen. Hopefully the replacement unit will arrive ASAP and I can then redo all the routes again!
I've also seen on other sites, that the refurbished units are also notorious in failing to respond to touch, after a few months. Hopefully I won't have this problem again, but saying so, I've also seen one owner report that was sent a total of 4 replacement refurbished units, for the same dead touch screen failure before he got a refund from Garmin.
Here in Australia, I also had to pay the return postage expense from my own pocket. ($10.50 AUD)
In hindsight, I would have been better off purchasing from "JB-HiFi" here in OZ and I could of have just returned it to the store for free, and they would have dealt with the warranty claim.
Not Happy...
Garmin has really dropped the ball. Not Happy at all.

Long shot. Did you have Tread installed on your phone ?
If so the routes may have synched and can be obtainable from the Tread App. They will have changed a bit, but they would be something to work with. Tread has an export facility.
It's for good reason for creating routes externally and saving them on the SD card as GPX files. They never alter and can always be accessed.
I had a look at the pre-boot options to see if there was anything there that would help. There is a boot from USB option, but haven't got a clue what that means or whether it would give access to the XT2's folders. Too late to help you now, but I'm going to try to find out.

Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

I tend to use Basecamp, and then export my routes / waypoints to Tread as a gpx file, which then syncs with the XT2, so am happy I have an external copy.
But, is there a way to then transfer the routes that are in the XT2's internal storage onto a SD card within the unit? If there is, that would then help those who don't use Tread to route plan on the XT2, to have a saved copy of their data.

For a while I thought that was a solution to my route changing problems. It seemed to work well, But I stopped using it. If it re-synchs then the route changes - but I think you have to press the synch button on the XT2 screen before that happens. I never got to the bottom of that.Oop North John wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 7:54 am I tend to use Basecamp, and then export my routes / waypoints to Tread as a gpx file, which then syncs with the XT2, so am happy I have an external copy.
There is a provision - using the copy feature, and it can be saved to the memory card. But when I try to import it from the copied file, it does nothing except to say "Some imported files cannot be read" on the banner at the top - and it hasn't imported them.Oop North John wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 7:54 am But, is there a way to then transfer the routes that are in the XT2's internal storage onto a SD card within the unit? But I have yet to try that with a route created in the way that you describe. Maybe it will import to a different XT2 ?
All routes are usually stored in Current.gpx - but I am not sure whether this applies to routes that are transferred from the Tread App. It has been a while since I tried this. Its probably in one of my posts on here. It's be quicker for you to look at Current.gpx than it would be for me. I've got a ride coming up and don't want to reinstall Tread and then have to do an XT2 hard reset to get rid of it at the moment !
But Current.gpx is often a big file - and you cannot access it form the XT2 itself.
You are able to export GPX files from the Tread App itself. This gives you Shaping points nad Via Points. None of the other info is transferred - so there are NO ghost points or navigation preferences. When you import them into the XT2 they are treated as imported, and the route has to be calculated - so they are prone to RUT isssues - unless you use the on screen 'Copy' facility and navigate using the copied route.

Re: Garmin has really dropped the ball. Not Happy at all.
I've found my research into Exporting the GPX file to the Tread app - via the phone (or any other method).
I posted it all in in here and we had a very useful dialogue about it https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewto ... 4&start=30
That was November. I don't think that I did anything much after that. I got bogged down with phone call issues on the XT2 (XT2 was leaving the phone call open - an issue between that particualr phone and the tread app). Then Christmas and then a weird illness that knocked my brain and body out of gear for a couple of months. ****
So - I'm going back to the original thought on this. I had 'discovered' that sending a GPX file to the Tread App and letting it synch resulted in a pretty good result. I cannot find any reason why I dropped it. I know that I also discovered that if you change a Via Point to a shaping point ont he tread app, it would (in certain circumstances) plot the route on a nearby faster road and take the newly changed shaping point with it - and also any nearby shaping points that had previously not been on the faster road. I spent a lot of time gathering video eveidence and sending it to Garmin.
Then I lost all ability to hang on to a train of thought.
So has that method been working perfectly for you with all routes ?? Is it worth me going back to and picking up the pieces ?

So your comment about exporting to Tread - is it worth going back to. I thought that I had found an issue with it - but now I am wondering: Did I just get caught up in other issues ?To explain how bad this was jfheath wrote: A few days ago I commented that I installed the new tread on my phone and was having difficulty stting up Tread so that it did not synch with the explore database. I think it was @turbo19 pointed out that you have to perform a master reset. When he said it, I knew that I knew it, but had completely forgotten. But was that me just telling myself that I knew that ? I didn't know.
Just searching through my posts for XT2 synch and tread for this reply - I found the answer. 18th October 24 - in a comment to someone else - I was very clear about the need to perform a master reset. (In fact it is in this thread). So I DID know about it. I'm not trying to score points here. I'm really concerned about what has happened to my memory over the last couple of months.

My system works as I've abandoned using shaping points. Not ideal as I now get announcements for points I'm not really interested in, but at least it's on a road I want to be on!

I did videos of this at the start of Nov. https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewto ... 433#p23433
Just checking through - that was as far as I got because of other things that cropped up.
In the tests that I did then - which had failed using other methods of getting the GPX route into the XT2 - route changes - thsis method worked OK. The route had been recalculated, but any shaping point changes had not impacted on the route.
But certainly if you then edit the route on the XT2 or in Tread, I think you can expect changes.
'Edit the Route' means any changes at all - even changing the name of the route slightly.

I have found that saving a route on the XT2 to the sd card using the copy feature does work. The secret is that you can not read it back in until after the XT2 has been turned off and restarted.jfheath wrote:

I would guess that the software is not properly closing the file or the sd card after writing, but I don't really know.
Given the long list of important things broken with the XT and the Tread app, I haven't bothered to report this one.

I don't think that I had spotted that 'feature' - I just noted that it found the file and then wouldn't import it.smfollen wrote: ↑Thu Mar 06, 2025 8:52 pm

But you are correct - if you restart the XT2, it will then import the file - if it was saved using the Share feature from the Explore section of the XT2.
ie Explore -> Route Banner -> 3 dot menu - Select and Edit -> Select -> Share button (3 dots joined with two lines, top right) -> Memory Card
Actually - the restart makes sense. It is MTP - media transfer protocol - storage. Maybe the XT2 cannot read from a file that is still open for appending newly shared data. That's how the files in the XT1 and XT2 behave when transferring from BAsecamp to temp.gpx. They are appended to, for the session, and if you start a new session by reconnecting the USB cable - it has to start a brand new file - overwriting the old one.
I don't know if sharing like this makes them 'Saved' . I'll check that out becasue it would mean having the ability to resave a number of routes in one fell swoop.
