Cardo Spirit HD headset arrived

Post by twowheelstom »

Received my new Cardo Spirit HD headset today, 1st thing I'm doing now is charging it up on the 5v 2.1Amp wall charger, then I plan to pair my android phone, I downloaded the Cardo Connect App to my phone, next after pairing is to run the Connect App and register the Spirit via my home wifi, I hope all goes well 8-)

well I created a cardo account, paired my android phone to the spirit hd unit, updated the unit to new system software v4.6, and learned how to turn the spirit hd unit off, and that is as far as I got for today, now I need rest 8-)

Tom, can I make a suggestion.... when you get ready to make pairing to the GPS, consider this combination.

I'm not 100% of the capabilities of your specific GPS unit, but if it passes/handles phone calls this should work.

Headset pair only to GPS unit, then pair the GPS unit to the phone.( you may have to reset your headset to 'forget' the phone pairing if you have already set it up)
With this combination the headset does not have to do any switching between audio streams, you would have only 1 from the GPS. This should give you the best option for full directions with less chance of words lost.

This is what works for me on both my 550 and XT.

thanks electro, I got it working, took me awhile to learn how to turn on the Spirit headset and which buttons to press to put it into paring mode, also tested out the speaker on the Spirit, that's works good, phone and Zumo 396 paired to Spirit which took awhile to figure out which buttons to press on the headset, on the 396 played mp3 music and Yahoo I can hear music on the Spirit headset, then did a short simulation route to a town gas station while music playing from 396 and Yahoo the Zumo navigation message interups music to give audio then returns to music, I am such a slow learner lol 8-) , next is to figure out how this Spirit attaches to my helmet, All is going good so far, I'm pleased with this Cardo Spirit HD headset, I soldered the ends of the 396 power cable with bullet plugs, plan to install the 396 power cable to an Accessory Lead inside the headlight bucket, that lead is on a 10 amp fuse from the motorcycle battery. What headset do you have, a Cardo? thanks for your help electro, I have a ton of work to do on my Kawasaki, brake fluid and rad fluid change, clean and oil the wheel chain, engine oil change and filter, lube throttle cables, check rear brake function. I like this headset, it's working good so far. lots to learn 8-)

Mine is a Cardo Packtalk Bold. Pairing is my XT as the hub. I have to pair the phone to the Cardo to do any configuration but then must break that connection when riding so that the phone is only paired to the XT.

Greetings Peobody,
I did pair my phone to the Cardo Spirit HD headset but only so I could run the Cardo Connect App that I had downloaded to my phone. I'm not sure there was anything on that Connect App that I needed to use.
what I learned yesterday was the phone paired to my Cardo Spirit headset as 1st bluetooth channel (paired to only run the Cardo Connect App) was causing a problem with my Zumo 396 bluetooth to the headset audio, I don't know why but when I unpaired my phone from the headset completely, the 396 audio to headset worked great with just the Zumo only paired to the headset, maybe If I get more knowledge of how this headset works I can repair the phone to the headset, I just don't have enough experience or knowledge about phone with headset pairing yet. I got the Zumo and headset working good, playing mp3 music from the 396 sd card and also 396 navigation audio to headset, maybe I had that problem with phone to headset because I had the phone pairing bluetooth channel #1 on the headset, maybe I need to make it the 2nd bluetooth channel on the headset, like make the Zumo to headset the #1 bluetooth channel and the phone #2 channel, dunno, besides, I am still not sure of the benefits of phone to headset connection when I'm riding, maybe I can just check my phone as stops to see If anyone called me, dunno 8-)

I don't know anything about the 396 but with XT, phone calls will pass through the XT, and texts will be displayed on the XT. For me, this is a iPhone paired only to the XT. There are settings both in the phone and on the XT that refine the behaviour. Complicating that is that Android is different from iPhone. I know that @jfheath has an Android because we identified different setting options and behaviours. IMO, the Android has the edge . Frustratingly, I went for a ride a few days ago and discovered that phone calls and texts were not working on the XT. I haven't tackled that problem yet but hopefully a re-pairing of everything will fix it.

Greetings Peobody, I love the XT had one but sold it for cheap, I got upset with it and in a fit of anger put it up for sale, lol what a boozo I am, the XT is a great device 8-) , maybe, I dunno but google says these bluetooth devices like GPS, headsets and phone, have channels, like channel #1 and channel #2, I learned that my headset can only have 2 bluetooth channels, and that the device paired to my headset 1st gets placed as channel number 1 and that channel has priority (I think) over the 2nd paired device to the headset placed on bluetooth channel #2 on the headset, I am just learning stuff as I go, so I think for a phone bluetooth paired to a GPS, the Zumo XT is probably going to have a number of channels for bluetooth and maybe pairing your iPhone to your XT gets placed as bluetooth channel #1 and your headset bluetooth to your XT gets placed on channel #2 within your XT, I think this same theory will apply to my 396, my android phone and Spirit headset, dunno, so I think the devices that are paired 1st in a specific order of which gets paired 1st to which device sets channel modes and channel priority modes. I dunno, I am only guessing on this, since these bluetooth devives need to know which bluetooth signal is given priority over other incoming bluetooth signals, If i am wrong on this, forgive me please, I am only guessing how these things work lol 8-)

here i googled which bluetooth device should I pair to my GPS first, my phone or my headset, and Google AI says this

When pairing Bluetooth devices with your GPS, pair the headset to the GPS first, then pair your phone to the GPS. This ensures the GPS processes music, navigation, and notifications, and avoids potential conflicts.

Tom, I have Android, and I use a Sena headset setup.(I sent you an amazon link to them in your other thread) I have 2 units. I can ride with my wife, or when I'm on a trip alone I carry the 2nd unit to swap if I get a low battery warning on a long day. Otherwise I alternate head units weekly when I commuting to work.
Sounds like you have the connections you want. I wouldn't go messing with phone direct to headset(for use while riding) as you will start to experience the audio stream switching delays again and missing your beginning words.
I gather that the Cardio uses an app on the phone for configuration, I don't have that with the Sena.
I do have pairing setup in my phone for my Sena, for use when I ride locally without either of the GPS units mounted. I just have to remember to manually select which device the phone connects to when I ride with the GPS units.
It comes down to habits...
All units off.. GPS on 1st, Headset on 2nd, making sure it connects fully, then phone BT enabled selecting the GPS for connection.
