What is this?

Post by lkraus »

Out riding today, no particular destination, so not following a route or track. XT was on, mainly for music and school zone warnings. Everything worked normally until I went through a small town and this orange bar popped up on the screen. It stayed in place for several miles, but the distance stayed the same at 0.5 mi and I finally stopped to see what it was all about. When I touched it, the bar scrolled up and disappeared, never came back. I do not remember ever seeing this before and I have no idea what it was telling me. Any ideas?

Looks like there’s a 1/2 mile of congestion up ahead.

If those two cars are indicating congestion, it was an error. It popped up as I entered a small town without much traffic. One traffic light, two roundabouts and one mile later I was back in a rural area with no one ahead of or behind me. The orange bar remained in place for 13 miles until I touched it, and the 0.5 mile indication never changed.

I've seen this and worse and my theory is it may be based on faulty traffic info. Other warnings that pop up in that same banner include a road closed (when it isn't) and a warning that I'm going the wrong way on a one-way road.

Here is some detail on the phantom road closure that really threw me for a loop...

There is a time lag in traffic information, there may have been a jam and it had cleared before you got there.

I would still expect the displayed distance to the jam to change as I moved, and not stay at 0.5 mi for 13 miles. And for the notification to disappear when the jam cleared.

Decided long ago to disable traffic info completely, because the info is not accurate and it can make a complete mess of carefully created routes.

I've came to the same conclusion on traffic data...
Last year on a trip to the east coast gps kept trying to send me on a 100 mile detour for a closed road, but yet traffic signage indicated local detours ahead, so obviously I followed the local signage and ignored the Garmin warnings.....

I get the one-way road warnings constantly and it’s very annoying. Even when stationary!

In my area, I seem to get warnings for being 'off road' in areas where the map is not up to date with new/moved roads......
