Ghosting happened yesterday

Post by Peobody »

I didn't remember seeing mentions of "ghosting" by the XT since joining for forum but mine did it yesterday. A forum search shows the last mention was in 2022 so at least I know that it has occurred for other folks. Heat appeared to be a factor but I don't think that was the case for me. Here's my story.

It was a beautiful 70°F (21°C) day so I decided to take a 3 hour tour (yes Gilligan, just 3 hours) following one of my local ride routes. I stopped for lunch about an hour into the ride. I removed the XT from its mount and stashed it in bike trunk as per my normal routine. I assumed it would go into standby like it normally does but I found it on when I returned to the bike. I thought "I must have accidentally activated the Cancel button when stashing it", put it back on its mount, and continued the ride. I first noticed that bike icon and the magenta line were not visible on the screen. It was as if a ghost finger had swiped the screen. Next appeared a screen that I had never seen before. I didn't pay attention to details, I just hit return to clear it. I then realized the auto-zoom was not working which lead to discovering that the zoom level buttons were not working. Touching them produced a point on the map beneath them instead. It was the same with the other 'on map' buttons. I road a few more miles and saw the 'ghost finger swipe' behaviour again so I stopped, rebooted the XT, and restarted the route. It behaved fine the rest of the way home.

I'm not in reaction mode yet, hoping this was just an anomaly.

@Stu, or anybody, do you know whether running in simulation mode is a valid way to test for ghosting? I'm running it now but am wondering if I might be wasting my time.

Thanks Stu. I haven't used it since the ghosting ride but this morning had the wild hair to test it with simulation mode. I'll let run through this 3 hour route just for the halibut.

I just contacted garmin told them the issue and they just swapped it with no arguments

I've heard of a lot of people getting them swapped even when out of warranty

I worked with the XT yesterday for about 4 hours in my office without issue. Most of that time it ran simulating a route. The rest was spent loading, confirming, fixing, loading, confirming, fixing, and then finally loading and confirming a new 5½ hr ride.

I decided to call Garmin this morning just to see what kind of response I would get. It was not a warm, fuzzy conversation. I was told:
"ghosting is not a problem on the XT"
"remove the anti-glare film" (it's been on for many thousands of miles)
"your XT is out of warranty"

The ride I planned yesterday is scheduled for the day after tomorrow. I'm anxious to see if the ghosting happens again.
