The only reason for having wifi is if you want to let it download maps and system updates automatically. Presumably it uploads your riding history as well - if you have given permission in the app.

Personally, I'd rather it didn't automatically download the day before I was going on a long tour. I'd rather leave it until I can upload what I want, when I want it. And since I have 4 Zumos to look after. (590, 595, XT and XT2), I like to do them all in the same week when maps come out. (It also means that I have a pre-XT2 unit - Express will put the latest maps onto the computer for Basecamp to access - for use with the XT2.

Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Hi,

I've been reading these posts with intrest, I bought a Honda Africa Twin a few months ago and like many people thought I'd probably never use the Android Auto but then decided to take a look after been introduced to My Route App for route planning.

My issue is also conflict between the XT, Schuberth SC2 headset and Android Auto.

I've been really pleased with the XT. I've successfully imported routes, navigated and made and received phone calls on the move faultlessly, until I connected to the bike via USB cable to use Android Auto, I didn't connect my headset to the bike.

Basically I was receiving directions and also listening to music via mp3 from the XT, although I have suffered the "slow music" thing. When I went to make a call via the XT I received the dial tone but when the call connected it switched to the bike and the bike just displayed the message "no microphone connected" which I understand as I hadn't connected my headset to the bike, but why was I able to instigate the call via the XT but then the bikes Android Auto "kidnapped" the call. I've tried everything but it would appear you can't use the XT alongside Android Auto on a Honda. Any information would be great. Many thanks.

First of all, welcome to the forums, and thanks for your comment.

The short answer to this is that I don't know. I haven't got a clue and have no experience trying to use Android Auto on a motorcycle.

But I have a thought that might be worth your contemplation. I don't know if this is how it is set up but

Phone <---> XT <---> Headset works well. The XT assumes control of the phone's functions.

But Phone <---> XT <---> Headset
and Phone <---> Android Auto

Is going to create a conflict. The XT caters for this in some ways - ie you can pair the phone to the XT and you can select which of the facilities are connected / controlled. You can do this as well in the BT connection of the android.

The problem is that if two devices are paired, one of them is going to pinch the connection from the other - unless it is somehow prevented from doing so.

I have just been pairing my phone to three different headsets. Only one of them will be connected. To prevent the other two connecting, I was able to go to the Bluetooth Seetings on the Android phone, click the gear icon alongside the headset and there is an on/off slider alongside 'Calls' and 'Audio'.

On the XT I can see there is an option to untick Media Audio as well. So if you have the phone connected then you can prevent it from using the Media. The XT will pair to both of my phones (so as I write this, I have one phone picking up the drive app. One phone picking up the media. But I cannot have both phones connected for phone calls. As soon as I connect the 2nd one, the first one is diconnected.

Neither can you piggy-back the phone call functions from (say) from the XT controlling the phones functions to the Android controlling the phones functions. Not that I am implying that you would do that.

I haven't tried to suggest these as solutions to what you are trying to do - becasue I don't know the setup with Android Auto on a motorcycle. Just throwing in some experiences with messing with BT (for the last two days). SOme of it may be useful. Maybe !

I turned off wifi when I found that everywhere I pulled into that had a wifi signal prompted the XT to check for updates before shutting down. I sometimes turn it on at home but mostly I just leave it off.

Thanks for replying and for the welcome.

Basically as you say there is conflict between essentially "two Bluetooth Masters", the XT and Android Auto.

I did have it working in a way that the XT was sending navigation instructions to my headset and Android Auto was taking care of the phone side of things.

But again after a while there was conflict.

If anyone is using their Garmin XT and is happy with it hen don't connect to the Android Auto as it's a nightmare breaking those connections.

I'm h
really struggling to prevent Android Auto from connecting to my phone and headset as soon as they are in range even when turning the Bluetooth off on the Honda.

I'm embarassed to report that some of my other posts on this issue may contain an error.

I was talking to someone yesterday about how when connecting my headset for a particualr purpose, trying to connect to another device seems to break the first connection. Yet it has two channels - which I thought that I had been selecting.

Its a Cardo Edge, and to get another device, you roll a jog wheel forward or backward. "GPS Pairing", "2nd phone pairing"
But it seems that for a gps you have to press a button. Whether or not it then behaves like a phone (like the Zumo needs to ) is nother matter.

I need to investigate this further.

Maybe your headset has some odd arrangement like this and you think you are pairing a second unit, but are actually over-writing the first ??

This may be helpful. Garmin does not reveal which protocols are in use for its various pairing options, but their names provide clues...
