Re: Old Routes
Deleting routes in the Trip Planner deletes them from internal memory and has no effect on Favorites. If the routes were placed on the SD card, the will have to be deleted from there as well. I connect my XT to my laptop and do this with Base Camp, it's easy enough that way. Others remove the card, insert it a computer, and go from there. To me there's no need to dive in that deep into files.

Re: Old Routes
It depends on what you mean by "delete". Deletion from within Trip Planner will delete the routes by deleting the files created during the import of transferred .gpx files. If the .gpx files remain on either internal storage or a card then they will be available for import again, so are not fully deleted. Some of us dig into the file system to remove old routes that we no longer want or need available for import. The crux of the question boils down to how you transfer routes to the XT. If you copy .gpx files to it then those routes will remain available for import until the .gpx file is deleted. If you always just transfer from Basecamp to internal storage then no files system effort is needed.

Re: Old Routes
It is. Delete them in the Trip Planer on the XT, follow up by looking at Base Camp. Simple enough.
