Zumo XT voice instruction at roundabout

Post by Mikey »

Hello XT’ers.

Below is a question about XT voice instructions given at a 4 way roundabout. Have XT users experienced a similar circumstance?

Thank you, Mikey.
……….
My most usual path through a familiar 4 entry roundabout (rbt) is to enter the rbt, cross it, and exit on the opposite side (exit 2). A one-way entry road is on my left (vehicles entering from my left). Apologies to LH drive readers.

As I enter the rbt the polite XT lady announces “take the first exit”. In normal rbt language usage this instruction would have me turn into the one-way entry road to meet oncoming traffic. For unfamiliar riders the XT instruction is quite dangerous. The turn might be made before seeing clear signage further down the one-way road.

A question comes to mind each time I cross this roundabout and I hear ‘take the first exit’;
- Does the XT recognise the one-way entry road on my left is not an exit option and thereby refer to the next exit, normally the second exit , as the first exit?
- Or, is the XT making a serious error and instructing the rider to turn into a one-way road against oncoming traffic?

Thank you, Mikey

One way streets aren't counted as you're not allowed to drive down them. It's not therefore an 'exit'.

Thank you, that makes sense, but what if Garmin does not know the road is one-way? Can I check somehow?

Presumably if Garmin doesn't know it's a one-way road it will tell you to take the second exit, and if it does know it'll tell you to take the first exit. What do you want to check?

And that's why I always look at the screen to see that the words agree with what I'll see.

@Mikey - one last chance to check:

Do you have another routable map, other than the standard Garmin ones, installed? Sometimes the Zumo get's weird, especially with the voice announcements, when another routable map like OSM is installed and active!

EDIT: found my previous post https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2822

Can't find my old post just now, but I had a somewhat similar snafu at a roundabout near my home. The XT would try to send me all the way around and take a different exit. No one-way involved, but I concluded that it got confused by the roundabout (and yes, despite rotaries being in the majority here in the US, this is a real rbt). If I recall correctly, a subsequent map update fixed the problem.

A map error was my first thought, but it makes sense that a one-way entry road would not be considered an exit.

It's funny that this has come up now because on my last ride I discovered that I was routed the wrong way on a stretch of one-way road by both Basecamp and my XT. I'm sure that is due to a map error.
