Wrench icon gone?

Post by Kvark »

Hi all. New here, but not new to GPSs and Garmin devices.

I have the Zumo XT and I do not use Explorer since I want the old school way of controlling my track display. Recently my XT stoped displaying the wrench symbol when I go into the Apps->Tracks. Some of the tracks still has the wrench symbol but most doesn’t.

One peculiar ting is that the first time I transfer a track from basecamp (Mac) to the device I can always access the wrench and display the track on map. But if I chose to not have it displayed and switch to another track I can no longer see the wrench symbol on the first track.

On the attached pictures you will see the wrench symbol on one of the tracks, but not on the other. What is going on?!

Thanks
Magnus

Welcome @Kvark

I've just picked up your message. I'll have a proper reply for you soon.

But a bit of additional information might be useful:

1) When you select Where To ? -> Explore - do you get another menu or do you get a screen with 3 icons and two option buttons 'Cancel' and 'Connect Now' at the bottom. (sorry - you will have to translate that into the language that your XT is set for (Swedish).

When you first get an XT it is difficult to know what is about to happen - and you set up Explore without realising it. You cannot get rid of it without a system reset. This applies whether or not you have the Explore app on your phone.

2) Where did you lace your tracks that you sent from Basecamp - was it to the Internal Storage, or was it to the SD card.

The reason that I ask is that:

1) reveals whether the XT thinks that it is using the Explore App in which case the option for turning tracks on and off is in the section in the Explore menu Collections. Tracks are made visible by turning on the collection to which they belong. Probably 'Unorganised'.

2) Tracks that are sent to internal storage are removed from where you placed them as soon as the XT has read them on startup. If they get deleted, they canot be recovered. (Same applies to Waypoints / Favourites / Saved locations).

If a track isn't available then the menu may not appear.

But I'm investigating as I type ....

Also ...

I cannot find a map that looks like yours.

I have found one that is similar by going to

Apps->Tracks->Saved Tracks and selecting one.
but for me, this shows the spanner / wrench

and

by viewing an active route, tapping the banner, tapping the map icon

This shows a preview of the active route, without a spanner/wrench tool - but it does not show the cyan track - which is usually the colour for your active logs - "where I have been" - but for me, this screen does not show that cyan old track.

So the next question is - how did you get to that screen ?

Thanks for quick replies

1) I get the 3 icons, not connected to Explore
2) No SD card in the device so sent from BC to internal storage. No importing of tracks from SD

From Home->Apps->Tracks->Saved tracks->[select track]-> and I have the screens I posted. Some times with the wrench, and some time without the wrench. Track colours are defined in BC and carried over to the device. That is why I have different colours on the tracks in the screens. I might not follow fully..

Ok - I had never noticed that the track colours from BC get sent to the XT !

Ok - I've repeated exactly what you have done and I get the spanner to allow access tot he track properties, including the visibility on the map.

So I'm clutching at straws from now on - but these things can sometimes cause issues.

1) Reboot your XT from a complete power shut down. ie Hold in the power button for 5 seconds until a message appears with a red button asking you to turn off. Wait a few seconds and then press the power button again.

2) Does the same thing happen with a different track ? You said you get the wrench on one track but not the other. There must be something int he track that is casuing that issue (maybe). In Basecamp you can duplicate a track. Double click the duplicate name and it will list all of the points. How many points are there ? You can delete some points - a handful right at the start (200 say) and another (200 say) right at the end. See if the problem remains with what is left. If it still does it, send me a private message with the gpx file of the shortened track attached. Assuming that your location is at the start or at the end, deleting those 200 should have hidden that from me. Then I can take a look, see if my XT does the same thing.

Other thoughts:

3) Check your software version. This can be found in Settings->Device->About

For reference -
The latest system software for the XT is v6.60 - but that hasn't been updated for a long time.
My hardware version is V9 Pv3 DT R512S

4) Update your XT with Garmin Express. I've just updated mine and the spanner/wrench is still showing when I display the track - so it isn't a software update that was causing the issue.

My best guess is #2

Just to add another voice to this discussion I will chime in to say that I can not duplicate the missing spanner after checking my15 saved tracks.

I did not know that a track color could be passed from Basecamp to the XT. In fact, I did not know you could set a track color in Basecamp. Thanks for that tip. I don't see a way to specify the default track color though. That would be cinnamon ice cream on my hot apple pie!

I knew you could set track and route colours in Basecamp, Route colours are always magenta in the Zumos. I guess I never bothered to try sending a track colour from BC tracks. I'm really surprised that I never tried.

I think that the default active log track colour (cyan) can be set in the theme files. Maybe there is a default track colour too. What is the hex code for an inconspicuous grey ? Maybe #CCCCCC at a guess.

Thanks a lot guys

Just for context, I only work with tracks. I like full control of how I plan my “routes” so following a track instead of a route is my way of exploring my surroundings. When you double click a track you get the long list of points and in that dialog window you can set the colour. I use different colours for representing tracks that I know I can ride, and other colours for tracks that are not yet explored by me and maybe not ridable (I ride off road bikes).

Tried rebooting it, tried resetting it. And the thing is, if I resend the exact same track to the XT, first time I have the spanner and can highlight the track on map. Then a few days later when I have turned the track off and maybe highlighted another track the spanner for the first track goes away.

My tracks aren’t crazy long (many ref point) so I don’t think thats the issue. I will keep track of which tracks that normally acts up and see if I can see a pattern here. I will play around with the number of reference points and I’m happy to share the “defect” once with you later on. Cheers guys.

I run v6.6 and I just realised one thing. I normally don’t update the maps every time there is a new release since it takes forever and I’m not interested in “normal” road riding. I will update the maps right now…

Ok - so that is in Basecamp. That's OK - nothing new there.

I am wondering if you are using a track in your Zumo. Do you load the track and then select Go! ?

In this case the track is displayed in magenta. There are NO navigation instructions and the track doesn't alter if you deviate. The 'button' in the bottom right corner (landscape view) shows a figure and is labelled 'Off Course'. If you do go off course, a dotted straight line shows you the direction in which you need to be heading to get back to the plotted line.

OR

Do you load the track, select the spanner and ask the XT to "convert track to trip" ?

In this case a route is calculated from the track and it is saved in Trip Planner. This is now a Trip (although it isn't the same as a normal Trip, so I call it a Track-Trip) You get a magenta line which follows your original track exactly. You get navigation instructions spoken and you get turn by turn directions. If you deviate, the XT will calculate a way to get you back to the original route as best it can.

OR

Do you just show the track on the screen and ride without asking the XT2 to do anything ie you do not press Go! It just sits there on the screen while your map moves about keeping you lower centre on the map, and displaying the map as you make progress. There is no magenta line - just your track in your chosen colour.

No - if there aren't that many points, that will not be the issue. I know the XT has a limit on the number of track points that it can handle. I don't recall what it is, (I'll find out and put it in here), but it is a pretty big number. You'd have to have a really very long track to exceed it.

Ok - found something. Others have reported seeing 10,000 as the maximum number of track points. I did a test (which I had forgotten about) and it stopped working after 14,999 points. Link Here
In fact @lkraus in the same thread posted the contents of GarminDevice.xml which shows <MaxTrackPoints> set at 15000.

If you are just using a pure track, then the map version doesn't matter. It isn't navigating a map. Its displaying the map and the track is a hilighter pen line drawn over it. That line can be drawn anywhere. It makes no difference.
