Trouble downloading maps via Garmin Expr. to SD

Post by Zumo-Wahtah »

Hi all, I am having trouble to download maps via Garmin Express to the SD card in my Zumo XT2. Under utilities I can see that the Garmin Express recognises the SD installed in my Zumo XT.
I have EU + ME maps pre-installed. I have a brand new 32GB sd card SDHC formatted to FAT32.

In Garmin Express - Manage maps - Removable storage
-> When I select the smaller maps (not USA) that I want to download to the SD and apply changes I see that the selected maps end up being saved on the main device.
-> When I select the larger MAP (USA) to download to the SD, Garmin Express does not allow me to apply changes. For some reason I expect that also here it wants to save it still on the main device, but as the EU and USA cannot be saved together on the internal 32 gb storage it does not allow me to save.
-> The only maps I successfully managed to save on the SD card are the very small maps: TopoActive Powersports Japan & Taiwan.

I already reached out to Garmin Support, but after 2 hours with Garmin US and Garmin EU support on chat, they gave up and I am still stuck with the same problem. I eager to find out if there is a fix or I am the only one with this problem.

I have USA maps stored on my SD card - In Express, if you hover over the name of the map that you want to install, after a couple of seconds it will pop up a message if there is not enough room to install the map. There is also a little blue info (i) symbol alerting me.

But I have a 256Gb memory card in my XT2. I'll report back how much space the USA maps occupy in a minute - as soon as Express has released it for me to inspect.

Oddly, when I first used Express, it did not show a tick alongside North America - even thought they were on the SD card. So I deleted all the img files and reinstalled - they needed to be updated anyway. The tick is now there.

Ok - USA is 8 files that occupy a total of 8.85Gb. I have all of Europe in internal storage.

What else do you have on your SD card ?
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Tx for reply. My 32GB SD card is large enough for the maps that I want to install. Sofar it only has less than 2 GB of storage as I managed to store the maps of Japan and Taiwan. So plenty of storage left. Up to now I am not able to store any other maps on the SD card.

I wanted to install US map due to upcoming motor trip to the US and the only way to do that was to remove the pre-installed EU map first. But this is all on the main storage and not on the SD card.

As noted on the following web site, the regular Windows and Mac OS programs for formatting SD cards can cause problems. This free app does a much better job, so you may want to give it a try. When I worked in the newspaper biz, we used this for camera cards. We could not afford to have a card glitch on deadline and lose news photos.

Hi Dan,
Downloaded and tried the SD card formatter program as suggested. But it did not make a difference.
tx anyway for the reply, as with these IT issues it can be any little thing and no try no gain.

Hoping for a Zumo/SD card motor driving Wizkit on this forum to solve my problem.
