Data transfer between ZumoXT and Android

Post by conehead »

I would like to transfer data from and to the ZumoXT just with an USB Connection and without usage of a PC and without Garmin Drive.
Until yet I was not able to accomplish this - Is this possible?? can anybody provide me with a step-by-step procedure??
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy 24 FE.

What data do you wish to transfer, and to what device will your USB lead connect your XT?

I want to see the ZumoXT as a "drive" connected to my Android (Samsung Galaxy S24 FE). So I want to copy routes and tracks to the Zumo and I want to copy tracks (expecially archives tracks under GPS\ARCHIVE) to my android.

I believe the Samsung has a USB-C jack and defaults to MTP mode per this article: https://www.galaxys24manual.com/change- ... galaxy-s24. Based on that, using the supplied Garmin USB cable along with a USB-C to USB adapter should allow you to see the file contents of the XT.

Simply connecting a cable between the XT and phone did not work with my Galaxy S10 because the phone did not recognize the XT's MTP mode.

I've had very limited success using an app from the Play Store to add that capability: USB Driver for Android Devices.

I also needed the OTG adapter that came with my phone to adapt the USB-A connector on my cable to the USB-C socket of my phone.

This is NOT a method I actually use or recommend because:
  • The XT still does not show up in any of my usual Android file managers.
  • The storage viewer in the app only allows selecting one file at a time and relies on copy/paste to move files.
  • The app is confusing to use and leads you to install unrelated apps if you are not careful.
  • Bluetooth had to be active to recognize the XT.
  • The phone battery is rapidly depleted, probably trying to charge the XT.
  • I could not get it to work more than once without uninstalling and re-installing the app.

Like @lkraus I have had limited succes using a Samsung Tablet and Total Commander.
It was indeed draining the battery of the Tablet. So not recommended.

One way around the draining problem might be to have a powered USB hub like this:

or:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145853363131 ... R5j_jZzmZQ

so that the tablet is charged, and data can flow between the other units.

I wanted to get data from a card in a video camera to an external hard drive, via my tablet, and wouldn't work until I had power going to the tablet via something like the link above.

Another way around the battery drain issue might be to use a data-only cable which would eliminate charging of the XT by the phone.

Edit: After posting this I went in search of such a cable. I didn't readily find one so forget this suggestion.

This may not exactly be what you are looking for, but I send routes and tracks to and from my XT and Android Samsung Xcover 7
by means of the Garmin drive app on the Samsung.

Open a route or track on the XT and "share" it with the Garmin drive app. It will be sent to your phone.
In the case of sending to the XT, locate the route/track on the phone and share it through the Garmin Drive app to the XT.
Sounds simple but works for me...

I had bad experiences with Garmin Drive, so I do not use it anymore
Garmin Drives changed the menu structure and the one or the other feature was not available anymore (but don't ask me what feature in details ;-))
