MyRoute app

Post by Neilwin63 »

Good Morning,

I have been using MyRoute app for route planning on my Garmin Zumo 390. I have successfully planned routes round the Alps etc.

I have found that if I go off route, to maybe see something of interest, I am unable to easily go back to my intended route via the way points I want and have set. The Zumo re-routes me direct to the final destination of a set route and not via the way points. This is quite annoying and has got me lost a few times and does not take me via the way points I have set. I have been told that is because I have used a .gpx file

Can someone explain if this is possible with MyRoute app to manipulate the file or route (without access to a laptop) or are you able to recommend a better app please.

Many thanks

Neil

I use MyRoute app and a Garmin 340 and 390 and a ZumoXT. A route created in Myroute app should behave in the same way as a route created in basecamp, except if you are using GPX1.2 file format to download routes to your Zumo 390. I use GPX 1.1 which includes the route shaping points (teardrop in MRA) and Via (Hand points in MRA). I do not use the MyRoute app connector to download routes directly into my Zumo 390 but just use windows file explorer to put the GPX files into the micro SD card on the device. I loaded it just to see how it worked!

If you use GPX1.2 format this really navigates a track of the route and only includes (Hand) via points you must turn off auto recalculation and navigate your way back to the magenta line if you use this format as if you don't the device will route you to the next via point (if you have included these in designing the route) or the end as there are no intermediary route points as such.

This is the dialog box in the Myroute connector.

These are the options for downloading the files to the downloads folder on your computer, Ios device or Android device. Selected from the top right hand corner of the route display screen

This is what a route looks like exported/downloaded as a GPX 1.2 file looks like. Note there are no intermediate points between the via (Hand) points in MRA parlance

If the GPX 1.1 file format is used then the shaping points (teardrop in MRA) are visible as little dots and used by the Zumo 390 in calculating re-routes.

I manipulate the routes I have taken on tour with me on my phone. You can do this via the web site in the same way as you would using a PC. I also use navigation next (the phone navigation app) as for me this is better for navigation than my Zumo XT. I use MyRoute app navigation on my Africa twin and a Zumo 390 (with a 340 as a backup) on my 24 year old R1150GS. To transfer routes from my phone to the 390 I use this set up.

The phone "sees" the Zumo 390 attached to it and you can transfer GPX files to the device or the micro Sd card in the device. Are there any better online route creation tools than MyRoute app route planner? Not that I've seen. I have a "Gold" subscription and the main benefit for me is that I don't have to carry a device capable of running Basecamp with me If I want to create/alter routes if I'm on tour. All I use is my phone and a map of a decent scale.

Using gpx1.1 gives you via points and the track. On an XT I change the track colour to red, set it at its widest and tick the box to show it on the map. Getting back on the route is then simply a matter of getting back to your track. I don't know if the 390 can do this, though!

Im not sure the 390 can do this then.
If I go off the route I set and return to a way point ( not the beginning) and start again it calculates the route again missing out all way points i have set and goes straight to the ending point. It took me few trips to realise this.

If you use the gpx1.1 format as described above if you go off route and have recalculate on then the 390 will bring you back to the magenta line at the next shaping point or Via point. If you want to go past a via (stopping) point you have to manually skip it. What format of GPX file are you transferring to your device. What level of MyRoute app route planner are you using?

Reading from the other reply above. You can run a track on the 390. It runs as a fine line over the route line. I usually run it as yellow or black over the magenta line.

Sorry, it is a 396. I will try it out with a local route.

I was not starting the route again, the option given if you go off route and turn garmin off/on it does not allow you to pick up along the route.

Yes, one of the unfortunate behaviors that my 590 and 396 has that previous devices did not. In order to get back into the planned route you have to create at least one or more Waypoints in the route, not just via points. This way, when you try to rejoin the route, you'll be offered these additional waypoints as where you can rejoin the route, and from the point you choose onward, the route will follow the planned via points. Whatever waypoint you select, the 396 will just calculate it's own route to get there based on your routing preferences.
