A interesting observation yesterday. Riding a plotted route, I deliberately missed a few shaping points. The satnav navigated me forward to complete my route once I had rejoined the plotted route, without complaint. In fact it didn't wait for me to rejoin the route - it spotted that I was heading towards it and removed the shaping points from the map - on one occasion, from 3 miles away.
But just before the last shaping point, I checked what was available in the Skip list - excpecting it to show the shaping point that was up ahead. Not so. There was one Via Point, from about 40 miles back. I cleared that and then had to clear all of the subsequent shaping points in order before the shaping point up ahead was available to skip.
I kept stopping to take screen shots so that I could analyse what was going on. I'm still pondering. It could have something to do with the route section, beginning at the Via Point, as it asked me if I wanted to skip it - event though I had driven past that particualr point.
I need to repeat the exercise on a much smaller scale. But on the face of it, it may mean that if you miss a shaping point, it may be necessary to press the skip button to clear it from the list. Although it didn't seem to affect naviagtion of the route.

This seems to overlook that fact that a Via point existed in the list but the XT wasn't routing you to it. I don't want to start a discussion conjecturing as to why. I'll wait for the retest. Thank you @jfheath for your efforts trying to figure out how the XT thinks.

Re: Focus XT - Shape Pnt oddity - not seen before.
Oh it did route me to it, and I went through it. The shaping points were all after it. I wanted to test shaping point behaviour first to see if all of my assumptions were correct.
Via points were going to be the next test, but I need to ponder on these results first. I intend to do a shorter test, more locally. It's easier to repeat and to fit it all on one screen shot.
After that I'll mix the two. I don't know yet what I have learned from this yet except at least one of my assumptions was not 100% correct.
I've got a brilliant shot of the routing from present position to a sh pt round 3 sides of a square. 2 sides were M62 and A1M, the other was a fast A19. But the direct route was a fast road too.
But that is OK. That behaviour is predictable.

I must have misunderstood or am confused about why a via point that you had gone through was in the 'skip' list when you were well past it, yet you weren't being directed to it. I thought the skip list only contained points not yet visited. It isn't important. I look forward to hearing about your next tests.

Re: Focus XT - Shape Pnt oddity - not seen before.
I was directed to it - it was the first or second route point. And I went through it.
I missed out all of the Shaping points after that Via point, but it still showed it in the skip list - along with all of the other shaping points that I had missed.
So I am confused about what it is doing too. I didn't start taking the screen shots until I first started ignoring the route - which was after the Via Point.
Lots to muse over.
We're off touring pretty soon so I won't be coming back to this for a while - hence I am answering queries now - then I stand a chance of remembering it when I get back !!

Re: Focus XT - Shape Pnt oddity - not seen before.
I am leaving on my next tour in three weeks. Six days = six routes. The only shaping points are optional coffee stops. All via points are precisely on roads except lunch stops and destination hotels. I expect to encounter a closed lunch spot or too so I expect I will have to do a skip or two. A recalc due to a closed road is also a possibility. I will be on firmware 6.40 and am anxious to see if the XT behaves predictably.
Safe riding!

Re: Focus XT - Shape Pnt oddity - not seen before.
This morning I rode the route that prompted me to start the topic "Frustrating last hour of ride with XT" (viewtopic.php?t=1826) which was about a recalc insisting on u-turns. The same thing happened this time too with a "but" which I will get to.
After going off-route I did 6 cycles of telling the XT to recalc each time I ignored a u-turn. There was one shaping point left in the route that I deviated from that I would not be going through so I hit the Skip button expecting to have to skip that shaping point. What a surprise when it came up with a shaping point from 64 miles back. I didn't show the one ahead like it did the last time. Once I skipped the one available to skip, the recalc worked as expected. Worthy of note here is that there were 6 shaping points and two via points in that 64 miles but skipping that one shaping point was all it took. The Skip button did not disappear like it did the last time after I skipped the point ahead. I did not hit the Skip button again to see if anything else was listed since the recalc resulted in a logical route to the end point.
Comments:
- The route is 140 miles long.
- This morning I entered it about 20 miles from the starting point using CEP. The resulting calculation would have taken me through a shaping point that was out of the way so I ignored it, riding directly to the magenta line instead.
- The route I rode this morning had been slightly modified to avoid a dirt road.
- The route modification and the down-route CEP entry were the only changes from my previous ride yet there was a shaping point well behind me that was available to skip this time that wasn't last time.
- I double checked the placement of that shaping point, both in BC and on the XT, to confirm that it was precisely on the road. It was. The shaping point was a waypoint set to not alert.
- The route was created in Basecamp, transferred to internal storage with the XT connected to the PC.
- Firmware 6.40 this time, 6.50 last time.
