Weird Bluetooth behaviour

Post by Fourbears »

Just for a change not about XT routing! Today I was out for a bimble and not using the XT for navigation as I knew where I was going roughly. However I was using it to listen to music and was playing the music on my SD card in it. For some reason it started breaking up, as though it was a problematic Wi-Fi or mobile signal so I paused and then played it. It then played at about 1/4 speed, like an old turntable so I paused and played it again. It then had a strange crackle so I stopped, turned off Bluetooth and back on again. It then behaved itself but struggled to play a couple of tracks properly before stopping. Anyone else had this? For info my Sena 10U and iPhone 13 were connected to it and it was over 25°C at the time. This has happened before but I didn’t take much notice of it. Next time I will!

Yes - I had that and reported it, But it was difficult to pin down to what was causing the problem. I believe that there was too much going on with BT for the unit or the phone to cope. I couldn't get it to do it using just BT to a headset or just music from the XT. I couldn't get it to do it on my desk.

I decided that using the phone to provide music to the XT and then the headsets resulted in too much traffic which one or both could not cope with. I stopped trying. The MP3 player on the XT provides better quality music anywya - if I need it.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Various Sena sets I have owned had these symptoms when there was even a small amount of corrosion on their contacts. I don't think the 10U has contacts like the old 20S and others, but this may help you diagnose if its the XT's contacts that are making a poor connection. When it was a Sena issue, all sound for all functions was distorted and crackly, including intercom, which of course does not involve the GPS. If you have the opportunity to test while talking to another rider, this could eliminate (or point to) the XT.

I didn't have it with BT headsets - it was with wired headsets on the bike, and I was riding solo at the time. But I tested it at my desk with a BT headset and failed to make it happen.

The issue was with using BT music from spotify to the phone and BT from phone to XT. I couldn't get it to do it with a different (thick) phone, a different Zumo. It was the combination of my phone getting data over the airwaves - and on the move.
I started to suspect that one or the other was seeking out BT connections from passing cars !
