Does anyone know if you can purchase Garmin maps and use Basecamp to export .gpx files without owning a Gamin satnav?

You can download Basecamp, but Garmin maps require a device and serial number to unlock.

Well it's possible although I'm unclear why you would wish to, but it would mean buying a Garmin map on a sd card.

That's what I thought. I'm leading a seminar on satnavs for my local club in a couple of weeks, and just wanted to clarify how interchangeable the various devices and routing software are. The upshot is that using Garmin software to route TomTom devices is possible but expensive.

Basecamp works just fine with free Open Street Maps (.gmap format), and TomTom does contribute to OSM. I'm uncertain about the practicality and limitations of using a .GPX file in a TomTom, or converting a .GPX to an .ITN file. ITNConverter used to work but it has been decades since I played with it.
