Alternative route through a busy town

A BC Route I am preparing has to cross a town (~4km wide) which has a fairly intense and congested grid pattern of streets. The Route chosen by BC is not one I would take due 1km of broken road surface and local traffic. I have travelled through the town previously.
I will arrive at the town about 40km after my START point.

How would other BC’ers overcome this issue please, and allow me to take a preferred route and exit the town on or near my outbound route?

In this instance you can't rely on Basecamp to do the routing for you. You should make your own determination about what roads you think would best circumvent the town and then place shaping points on those roads forcing Basecamp to route around the town on those roads.

Alternatively, would this work; could I place a Via Point before the town and one on the exit side on my intended route. Would this deliver me to the town and allow me to navigate through the town, on a route I chose on the day?

You could simply divert as you wish and allow your Zumo to recalculate as you go along, no need for any additional points.

Short answer is 'yes'. Base Camp and zumos often require numerous points over a short distance in towns to create the EXACT route you want. I also agree with an above post- you are free to take whatever route you want by ignoring, or even TURNING OFF, the zumo. If you're going to ignore it, I strongly suggest you turn Auto Recalculation to Off or Prompted.

Could you not just right click on the route and and use the 'insert into route' option to select your prefered route?

Add enough shaping points to force the route away from the bad roads.

OR

Turn off Auto recalculation, and ignore the GPS while you use your own judgement. Rejoin the magenta line on the far side of town and continue.

I would not use "Prompted" recalculation, as it will likely continue to provide unwanted results until you are nearly out of town.

Can you not just put in an "avoid" area, and then make sure your GPS mirrors that?

Thank you everyone above for your helpful answers and suggestions. My question probably indicates a less than complete understanding of what happens if I depart from the magenta line while riding between two Via Points.

I have read many of the articles and information on the forum, but have to confess to being a bit slow in absorbing it. I will keep working on it.

Sounds like this is a perfect time to find out what happens. I'd turn auto recalculate off, go a way different than the magenta line, meet up with it later, and see what happens.

I suggest you add an additional via point a little further down the road. Just in case you need to restart your route, you can select that new point as your start point.
