2026.1 update

Post by waspanman »

Just looked at updating to latest maps. Garmin Express in map details under options, only allows a reinstall of current maps (2025.1).
Before it allowed a choice to update the latest maps on your unit and/or the computer, having latest maps only on the unit is of no use to me.
Does GE update both now?
Any pointers???

Do you have an XT2? If yes then Garmin Express 7.24 "helpfully" stops you loading it onto your PC as the XT2 isn't officially supported by Basecamp.

No just an XT, as it's my second unit, I called it XT 2 as a nickname, maybe that's the problem, or Garmin are just being their usual helpful selves

I'd try deleting Garmin Express and re-installing it. This will mean that the GPS's it knows about are deleted, but I've had no bother recognising them again.

Just because there's an update doesn't mean you have to do it........

GE version later than 7.20?

Make sure Basecamp is not running when running GE.

I need to apologise, I did not realise that Garmin Express had its own section, that's probably because it's such sh-te.

I have never been able to get it to recognise my units for a second time during a download and always have to uninstall it, then reinstall, this is for all three units.
For a piece of software designed? to support users, it must be engineered by sadists. The latest revision does not now allow you to update the unit and the computer at the same time, as it used to, thereby increasing the download time by at least 30%, important if you have low line speed as we do here in the sticks.
It cannot interrogate a unit to see if it has an SD card fitted, even though Basecamp can, It fails to see the unit if there is a break in the download
process.
A pretty sorry attempt at customer support, I would suggest, let's be honest, It shouldn't be this difficult, many users are not as determined and just give up.
It seems each new iteration of GE is a step backwards.

I have owned Garmin sat navs for 20 years now and often wonder why.

If you have never had these problems, feel free not to contribute.

Garmin has changed the way it works as folks often had issues when selecting to update both at the same time. However for me Express has been bombproof for many years now, both on Win 10 and 11. I'm not sure why you say it won't recognise a SD card as it does on my devices? As for increasing download time it doesn't significantly if at all, it downloads the main files needed first, then compiles them either to enable it to send the appropriate files to your device or to install files for BaseCamp to use.

I'm old enough to remember updating the maps by CD. Oh what fun of wondering what warning messages you should take notice of, or ignore!

GE isn't perfect, but at least you can roll back to a version you like fairly easily.

Every other business puts its important functions in a prominent position for ease of use, it does not hide them so that only the cognoscenti understand their location.
Garmin Express is not user friendly, it is the product of those ivory tower mentality individuals who do not understand the difference between data and information.
Having just built my very first website, even I can make things easy to access, as a huge multinational company Garmin should be able to do the same

Remember, this forum exists because Garmin have failed to make their products easy to use.
