Best way to import gpx with tracks and points of interest?

Post by FULL_MOTARD »

I am trying to simply import an existing gpx from our BDR that has existing tracks and points of interest. I can successfully transfer the track and points of interest from Basecamp to the 396, but can only get the tracks to stay on the map. This is the process I am following:
I had to go to Apps->Tracks (select a track)->tool icon->show on map. That displays the track on the map.

To get the POI to display from a custom GPX file, you go to Where to?->Saved (favourites in UK) ->click upper left menu icon->import and import all of your desired POIs.

When you go back to the main screen and select "view map" it will all be there.
That works until I restart the device. Once I do that, the tracks are still displayed but the POIs are gone. The POIs are still stored in "saved (favourites in UK) but reimporting them from that menu doesn't cause them to reappear. I have to delete the entire saved folder and reload it. Clearly this cannot be the intent.

Is there a better way to do this? I won't have a laptop on me to use basecamp everyday camping.

Welcome to the forums.

You shouldn't have to re-import them. They should still be listed in Where To? -> Saved - in which case the issue is with them being displayed on the map, not that they are not there in the Zumo.

However, there was an issue once with only the last imported items being shown on the map - if you import other items (waypoints / Saved) then the earlier ones would not show up.

I'm going to need to rack my brains to try to recall what the issue was. I don't have the 396, but the 590 and 595 behave in a very similar way (as far as I have been able to tell, and it was on one of those that I observed the issue.

Are the waypoints / saved location part of a route or are the just stand alone.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Thanks for the quick reply. Your description is exactly what's happening but I was trying to use the semantics of the menu which can be ambiguous.

I've imported a GPX into basecamp that has various tracks and points of interest. From there I upload to device.

All tracks and points of interest/waypoints make it to the device just as you described. They persist in their locations and survive reboot, however I cannot get the POIs/Waypoints to display on the map after the first time. They do appear initially. I am zoomed in.

It would be great if I could make a trip out of a track that doesn't turn it into a route but I'm not sure that functionality is present.

On the 595, the option to convert a track to a trip is in:

Apps->Tracks->Select Track -> Spanner (icon, top left corner of map lanscape view) -> Convert to Trip

That gives a magenta line that you can follow and which gives turn by turn instructions - but there are no route points. If you wander away from the magenta line when riding, then the Zumo makes every effort to get you back to the closest point of the magenta line from your current position - so if you keep ignoring instructions it goes hunting for a more up to date closest point.
(Providing you don't end up with the only way back being behind you, when it gets really irritating).

I think you know anyway - but just to make sure. Garmin seem to confuse the issue - between trips and routes.

I think that originally, a 'trip' from Basecamp was a multi-day event consisting of a number of separate routes for each day.

But a 'Trip' in Basecamp was a clunky bit of software which was not (in my opinion) very well implemented. I've not come across a single person on these forums that have mentioned using it.

But the term 'Trip' started to be used for what everyone else called a "Route".

With the XT2, they have finally started calling them 'routes'. "Route Planner", "Load a Route", "Routes" in the menus with Tracks and Waypoints, and when a track is selected you have the option to "Convert to Route" - Not "Convert to Trip" . There is not a single mention of a 'Trip' anywhere on the XT2. (I'll regret saying that - someone will find one now !!)

And they have also decided to call Favourites/Saved locatuons for what they are : "Waypoints".

So on this forum, you will see the word 'Trip' used when people are trying to stick with the term used on a particular Zumo screen. But when they are talking generally, most of us use the word "route".

Route / Trip ---- They are both terms that mean exactly the same thing.

I'll go hunting because I had this issue with Waypoints not showing up once. Part of it was related to the level of zoom - but that wasn't all of it. I'll see if I can find wahat I said about it.

Its definitely confusing and its good to hear they went back to using the term Route versus trip. My issues are sorted now.

I'll just add this - because I found what I was looking for.

It turned out that on my 590 or 595, Saved Waypoints were not showing up on the map becasue in order to do so, 'Up Ahead Places' needs to be selected. If that option is ticked then the Waypoint 'Heart' symbol showed on the map for all waypoints saved in FAvourites/Saved.

But - so did symbols for the three other categories shown by 'Up Ahead Places' - which cluttered up the map considerably.

So to stop that from happening, I customised Up Ahead Places and used my own custom search.
So I had it searching for XXX and YYY and ZZZ - and these were the three categories that I had if I ever displayed the list of up ahead places.
And not surprisingly, it never found any, so no symbols were displayed on the map.

Except for the Waypoint symbols - which all appeared as a long as Up Ahead places was ticked in Settings->Map & Vehicle->Map Layers.
