Create a Route on the XT Screen - Hassle Free

Post by jfheath »

Simply put - to create a route
  • Create your waypoints by tapping on the map and saving each one in turn. Give them names.
  • Build a route in the Trip Planner app, using the waypoints that you have already created.
  • Reorder if necessary, and change Vias to shaping (or vice versa) if necessary.
And thats it. What follows is a more detailed step by step way of describing how to do this.

=====================================================================================
=====================================================================================

Set Up the Zumo
  • Plug you Zumo into a charger.
  • If you are working purely on battery, then set the time out to 'Never' : Settings->Display->Display Timout
  • Turn off the satellite reception. Settings->Navigation->GPS Simulator->Tick
  • Select Where To?->Favourites. All Favourites will be listed, but there may be other entries listed underneath in alphabetical order. These are categories - set up by you.
To explain the above, jfheath wrote:Turn off satellite reception so that the Zumo can save your location after creating each waypoint.
If the Zumo goes into standby, it turns satellite reception on again, which we dont want.
Create Waypoints for your Route
  • Waypoints are saved locations. On the Zumo XT they are referred to as Favourites (UK) or Saved (USA)
  • View Map. Tap the map screen and the display changes. It places a symbol where you tapped. Ignore it for now
  • Tap the North Up arrow.
  • Zoom the map in or out and scroll until you find the place that you want your first saved waypoint.
  • Tap the map to plant your flag point. If the flag is not accurately placed, zoom in further and try again.
  • Tap the black flag on the white background.
  • Tap Name. Change it eg 01 Hebden, and Tap Save
  • Tap Set Location. (bottom of the list int he right hand image below (scroll down) - if it is not there, then the GPS receiver has been turned on again - probably because the screen shut down.
  • Tap Done

To explain the above, jfheath wrote: This sounds like a lot to do - but basically, you are planting a flag/waypoint and naming it. Setting the current position keeps your bike position on the screen at the last point that you placed. It makes finding the next point so much easier. Particularly if you are planning a trip ine Europe and you are sitting at home in California. Each new point would require you to scan across the Atlantic.
Repeat the above for as many waypoints that you want to save.

Now - Create the route

Repeat:
  • Apps->TripPlanner->New Trip->Select Start Location->Favourites
  • Either
    • Choose All Favourites / Saved
    • Or select Categories followed my your Category name (eg 'M')
  • Tap on the waypoint from the list and then tap Select
  • This is now back to the Trip Planner list with your first point added to the start.
  • Tap on Add Location
Until :
  • You must have a final destination. If you forgot, then add the last point again and delete it later.
  • Once the route is complete, click Next
  • The entire list is displayed, and you can click Save
  • Give your route a name.
The route list is now displayed in edit mode. But it is worth knowing how to get into edit mode from the start screen:

Editing a Route / Trip

When you put Waypoints into a route, they default to being Via Points - orange flags, but any Waypoint can be set as a Shaping Point.
  • Apps->Trip Planner->Saved Trips->Select your Route / Trip from the list
  • That returns us back to the same screen that we had after completing the route / trip.
  • Check the order of the route points.
  • To delete, tap the point in question and on the bar that is displayed, tap the red bin.
  • To re-order the route points, tap on any Via point, and on the option bar that is displayed , tap the double arrow.
  • This displays the entire route, and evey route point, via or shaping, has a double arrow icon at the right hand side. You can point at this and drag the entire line to a new position in the route.
  • When you have route as you want it, tap Save The route will recalculate to adjust to the modified order.
To change the Via Points to Shaping Points
  • Tap the orange flag.You will get a message about route timing. Say Yes (if you agree)
  • The route will recalculate its timings and the changes are saved with the route automatically.
To change the Shaping Points to Via Points
  • Do exactly the same as above - tap the blue disc icon, and the point changes to a Via and the route recaclulates

Creating a route in this way has three major (but often unnoticed) advantages.
  1. Because the route points were all created as Waypoints, the XT will not alter the name of the shaping and via points. They are still saved Waypoints.
  2. Because the waypoints are saved elsewhere, as wella s in the route, the XT cannot change their position either.
  3. Because the route was created using the XT screen, it is regarded as 'Saved' rather than 'Imported'. That means it behaves perfectly.

Regarding the use of Categories
  • If you assign your waypoints to a category, then you can display only just your current list of Waypoints arranged in order of distance from your current location.
    This can save a lot of manual searching.
  • If you have waypoints alread saved in Favourites / Saved, then you don't have to create another one for this route. Any waypoint can be assigned to a number of categories. Just select:
    Where To?->Favourites / Saved->All Favourites -> Choose your Waypoint->Tap the (i) button->3 bar menu->Edit and you can add your category to any that it is laready assigned to. That Waypoint will then appear in your category list.
  • You can also assign a waypoint to a category in Basecamp:
    • Multiselect the waypoints that you want.
    • Right click the list and select Open
    • Select the categories tab and type in the name of the Category that you want to use. (Your choice of name)
Dont forget to reset your display time out. The GPS receiver will trun on then next time you trun on the XT
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !
