105 How RUT Behaves

A Closer Look at RUT Behaviour - U-Turns are disabled
I had realised that RUT behaviour could be guaranteed on certain routes if the Zumo had recalculated my original route. This could be achieved quite easily by tapping the 'Skip' button. When SKip is pressed, the Zumo XT will recalculate all of the sections of the route.

So I would put in an a completely unnecessary route point just after the start of the route, simply so that I could skip it. This was so that I could home in on the behaviour of the XT - because this weird behaviour was then no longer a random event. Later on in the route, I would take the road that I always intended to take - deviating from the XT's plotted magenta line. The map oppositie is such an example - deliberately set up so that I could take some screen shots to show RUT behaviour. This isn't a one-off - I have observed the same behaviour on numerous routes, sometimes without having pressed Skip beforehand.

Pic 3 This is a screen shot which I took about 2 miles from my final destination. I am heading south. I had deviated from the magenta line in the top left corner - under the large A1(M) label. From the A162, the XT's route was to take the A1(M) south for about 11 miles and then turn east to the chequered flag. Instead, I turned east on the A63 and then headed south on the A19 - completely ignoring the A1(M).

The XT wanted me to go back the where I had taken the A63 east. I have no problem with that, from that location, going back to the A1(M) is definitely faster. It is only after passing through Hambleton (the red square) that it becomes faster to take the route that I rode. But it continued to want me to go back for the rest of the journey. I had disabled U-turns, so in order to get me to go back, it had to use different methods, such as looping around village side streets. There are no other route points before the final destination.

The picture shows the route that the XT has plotted to get me to my final destination. I am 2-3 miles from the chequered flag and it is still wanting me to go back to the place where I ignored its instruction to take the A1(M) - about 16 miles ago. That is a 30 mile route that it is taking me to reach my final destination 2-3 miles ahead.

The XT tried to get me to go back in a number of locations, but three of these places stand out clearly on the route shown on the map. Remember - this is not a plot of where I have been - I didn't take those detours. It is a plot of the route that the Zumo has created to reach the chequered flag. So the question is - why are those detours in the route at all ?

And to suggest an answer to that, I think that I need a new page....
