32 Setting Off - Select Next Destination

The right way and the wrong way

This is probably best explained in pictures. The trip is reversed from previous images so the route starts at 485 Skipton, a mile north of the town centre. You should select 485 Skipton as the 'Next Destination'. The images shows what happens if you select 3 different destinations.

Map 1 - I selected 485 Skipton as my ‘Next Destination’.
The magenta route shows all of the Via Point flags and the blue Shaping Point discs. It is taking me through every point in my Trip. This is what I want to see. The full route.

Map 2 - I selected 178 Girvan as the ‘Next Destination’.
The route heads to Glasgow on motorways. There are no flags or discs plotted - it ignores the original route until it gets to the point I selected - 178 Girvan - where it picks up the remaining discs and flags.

Map 3 - I selected 000 Fort William as my next destination.
I have changed all of the Via Point flags to shaping points. As a result, there are no Via Points to list when it asks me to ‘Select Next Destination’. I have just Skipton or Ft William. Which to choose - “I am already at Skipton, so my destination is Fort William. No?” Answer: No. It will take you the fastest way to Fort William - motorway, all of the way. This is a very common error - but look at the map. None of the shaping points are shown. It is not using them.

The Start Point is the correct selection. It helps to have the 485 Skipton point plotted (say) a mile or so beyond the town, on the road you want to be riding. The XT will take you to that point and then seamlessly navigate the whole of the route from there.

Your preview map should show all of the route points that you want to visit after joining the route. If it doesn’t then it will have calculated a different route from the one that you wanted to take.
