71a An Off Road Route with Basecamp

Going Point to Point.

Create a Route on Basecamp

Create Waypoints for the key places on your route eg Start, End, stopping places / landmarks. Use Basecamp’s Flag Waypoint tool.

Create a route from the Waypoint list (highlight them and right click to get that option). Don’t worry about the weird route that Basecamp makes - unless you used CTRL-Click to select the points, they will probably be in the wrong order.

Double click the route name to get the Route Properties dialogue box. Click the tab labelled Route Options and click the drop down list for the Activity Profile. Pic 1   Choose the Direct profile.

This should change your route to show a sequence of straight lines between your Waypoints. Zoom in and make sure that the Waypoints are actually on the track. Put the Waypoints into the correct order and name them as you wish. This will result in a point-to-point route like the one shown below.

This should change your route to show a sequence of straight lines between your Waypoints - like the image above - Zoom in and make sure that the Waypoints are actually on the track. Then use the Insert Tool to add enough Shaping Points to pin the route to the trail or path. Close enough is good enough. As long as the SatNav shows you where you are heading, that is all that matters. Check the route properties. Only the original Waypoints should be alerting Via Points. Pic 2

Transfer the route to the Zumo XT.

Do this in the normal way from Basecamp via USB. Drag and drop the route to Internal Memory. (Not the SD card at this stage - Tips and Tricks for more info about that.)

On the Zumo XT

  *   Make sure that Settings -> Navigation -> Calculation Mode is set to Straight Line
  *   Make sure that the vehicle icon is ‘Off-Road’. (Pic)
  *   Also Settings -> Navigation -> Off-Route Recalculation is set to Off
  *   Import the route, Maps -> Trip Planner -> 3 bar menu -> Import

The XT screen (Pic 3) shows the route from Basecamp with the Via Point flags and the Shaping Point blue discs.
Click Go and select the start point or one of the mid points.

  • The XT will navigate you from one Via Point to the next along the short straight sections that you have plotted.
  • The flagged Via Points are an integral part of the route and they alert on arrival with the names that you gave them.
  • The data view shows distance/time to the Vias (Pic 3).
  • All of the Shaping Points and Via Points are visible on the map.

The following images show the XT screen with the route loaded and running, with birds-eye imagery and 3D mapping in full use. This road is Cam High Road above Wensleydale, Yorkshire. It is mostly bridleway, not open to traffic - I just used it because I wanted to see what happened in simulation when the section that is navigable road (private) met the section that is not navigable.
