Handlebar Controller for XT2

Post by jfheath »

Please note - the discussion about cables in this thread is now out of date.
jfheath wrote:The thread discusses the way that the handlebar controller is wired up. The downloadable instruction manual suggests a cable that did not exist when the controller was announced. The three cables that did exist (power cable and two varieties of Y cables) were not mentioned in the manual - so we were trying to work out exactly what needed to be bought. I bought both cables for the XT2 and the controller having had the purchase verified by product support - who had to go away and ask someone else.

However. A brand new fourth accessory cable has recently been listed which seems to be all that you need to buy. It matches the diagrams in the manual - but not the text. See later posts Page 4 28th Dec 2024.

Newly Available for the XT2 and Tread Devices

UK Site : https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/1485199/pn/010-02974-00

Info is being added as I looked at the pages. I found the instruction manual a few minutes later.

It may need a power cable Y adapter for the XT2, or it may be supplied with one.

Thanks to GeorgeKingGeorge on the AdvRider website for alerting me to this.

For Info - we still do not know what is included in the controller box - but it looks like the following items need to be purchased to fit a controller to an existing XT. Info is provided just for references. Please check things out for yourself. Note that Garmin supply 2 different Y adapters.

Handlebar Controller ----------- 010-02974-00 --- £129.99 --- $149.99
High Power Cable --------------- 010-13087-01 ----- £59.99 ---- $59.99
Group Ride Radio Y-Adapter --- 010-13285-00 ---- £34.99 ---- $39.99

Edit - just been playing to see where it would fit.

This might do the job - the vertical Ram Ball is currently just push fitted onto the existing clutch lever clamp bolts. The controller's circular clamp might secure to the horizontal part as it is, but I have some 1" diameter PVC tube which I could soften and drive over the horizontal RAM ball mount.

The controller would clamp verticaly over that (although I was thinking of trying to secure it horizontally somehow). It is out of the way of my hand, within thumb reach and doesn't catch the screen on full lock. It probably doesn't need the full length of the horzontal part if mounted vertically . If it works vertically, a Ram ball on a thread and a piece of 1" diameter alloy with a threaded hole in one end would make a neater job.

How does this connect to the previous installation? It seems that some other cable is needed. :?

It may be this one:

Installing the controller is going to be more expensive than the XT2...

Does the controller come with a cable already attached ? If so - what does that look like ?

Yes, I looked at the schematic in the morning, but it doesn't match the cable that the manual says is needed (010-13285-00, which is the one I have and I have uploaded the photos). I don't know which cable appears between the battery/XT2/controller in the diagram.

Maybe both cables are included in the remote controller?

We will have to continue investigating.

Some photos of Garmin website, where you can see the menu that appears by clicking on applications.

Long press options and short press options. It will be interesting to see how many options there are to configure it, because they talk about managing music as well (I understand that phone calls can be handled as well.

In Spain they have given me 3 weeks to hand over command. I wanted to leave the installation ready for when the remote arrived, but I will have to wait to be able to do the installation.

Thanks @jfheath ;)

Just from a glance of the screen on the display you posted above - that each of the buttons can be a long press or a short press. And the + / - / O / triangle - I reckon are just symbols for you to program as you want. If my assumption is correct, that would be 8 different functions. I guess that you get to choose from a list of available functions, which ones you want to be assigned to which button.

So if music is important then you would probably have 4 of the functions dedicated to that. I am guessing.

Would this make sense ?

Remove Present XT2 cable form cradle and from battery.
Buy High Power Cable
Buy Group Ride Radio Y-Adpater
Join them togther.

Plug Handle bar controller into in-line micro B USB ? connector, leaving a spare USB connector so that you can buy the group radio set-up !!!!

This diagram is all Guesswork.
But is based on the information in the published instructions for the Handlebar Controller for the XT2

Wiring Query.png
Wiring Query.png (346.63 KiB) Viewed 2819 times

The above arrangement conflicts with the diagram - but not with the text. Also the XT2 & Group Ride 'Bundle' includes the standard power cable, the high capacity cable and the Group Ride Radio Y-Adapter.

I've labelled the diagram with micro B USB connectors - because from @turbo19's photo, they look similar to that variety of connector (as used on the Zumo 590 and Zumo 595) - but they may be something different.

Stop Press

The assumptions that I made to create the diagram were perfectly correct. But are now redundant. Not two days since Santa delivered my controller and two cables as described, but a new cable has appeared on the Garmin website: see screen shot below.

Garmin asnwer, and solution (@jfheath you are right):

https://support.garmin.com/es-ES/?faq=j ... tab=topics

Clarified issue, the Y-adapter and High-Current Power Cable are required.

Thanks for feeding back @turbo19

So the prices I posted above are the total cost to install this thing. £235 UK and $250 USA.

I note that the latest system software - 4.80 - adds the controller to the App menu. But you cannot do anything with it until you have the controller plugged into the wiring harness.

Just so no one feels stupid, I just called Garmin to ask about cabling this thing and the tech couldn't figure it out either and told me to, "just buy both cables and if you don't need one send it back and let us know." From what has been described above and is obviously correct, both cables are indeed going to be necessary which makes this controller pretty pricey. I'm already in this far having bought the controller so might as well go the full monte :-)
