Dont forget the the list of announcements to come through is on the XT2 itself - not on the tread app.

I am wondering if the GPS has got to be moving ? Reason I think this might be the case - I have yet to get messages popping up when I try it at my desk. So before I went of my last long ride, I turned on all notifications and forgot about it. I had messages popping all of the time. First stop, I turned them all off except messages and emails.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Yes I know, I keep my iPhone in my pocket when riding and only use the XT2.

I have been moving, but I’ve yet to see any text messages or anything other than live traffic delays appear on the right of the XT2 screen.

So before I went of my last long ride, I turned on all notifications and forgot about it. I had messages popping all of the time.
So the pop ups are for other things, not just texts? Yes, I can see how that would be annoying. I don’t know what these pop ups actually look like as I’ve never seen any.

When I return from rides and check my phone, I’ve usually got lots of WhatsApp messages and text messages and some emails, none of which have been notified in any way on the XT2.
First stop, I turned them all off except messages and emails.
Ah, so emails too are supposed to pop up? With never having rcvd any of these notifications that’s something else I was unaware of. It’s good that you are able to select which pop ups you wish to allow.

Where did you control the pop ups permissions from? Is this setting on the XT2 device?

In Android you select them in the Tread App. With iphone is different, I think that you have a menu in the XT2 BT options to select notifications.

I use wasap (social) and calendar. If you have muted conversations and groups in WhatsApp, only the priority ones appear on the XT2. ;)

The user manual says from main screen select the 4 squares icon, scroll down to Smart Notifications to list all notifications.

When I do this it says Open Tread app on phone.
But it’s already open, running and connected to my XT2!

These sure are confusing and unnecessarily over complicated frustrating devices.

Android phone.

In the tread app...

With the map on the screen (not the route), tap the 3 bar menu, top left.

Select Settings

Select Smart Notifications

Yes, but as you say, that’s the Android version of Tread. On the iPhone notifications are controlled by the phone itself.

The Garmin Tread app support page says..
For Apple iOS, no configuration is needed for Smart Notifications in the Tread App. The smart notifications sent to the device are configured in your iPhone’s settings > Notifications. If the notification is enabled at all on your phone, it will be sent to the device.

Anyway, I’ve been doing more testing. I factory reset everything and re-paired everything again. It’s important which order the pairing is done and which devices are paired together.

I normally use the XT2 as the control/hub and connect iPhone to XT2 and Cardo headset to XT2. This is what I’ve been doing but couldn’t get smart notifications to work.

So this time I tried a different way.. Pair Cardo to iphone and pair iphone to XT2. The XT2 saw smart notifications pop up immediately, but I couldn’t make any calls or do anything with the phone being controlled from the XT2; it kept saying I needed to connect an headset. It couldn’t see that the headset was already connected via the iphone.

So I tried to pair the cardo headset with the XT2 but even though the headset was in pairing mode the XT2 couldn’t find it. It just kept saying headset not found. It seems that the Cardo can only pair to one device at a time, and as it was already paired to the iphone it couldn’t also pair to the XT2.

I then tried pairing the XT2 to the cardo as intercom, using cardo rider channel A. This time it connected right away. The smart notifications worked, but when I tried to make or take a phone call the XT2 disconnected and passed control back to the phone so I couldn’t disconnect the call or anything from the XT2.

This happened with both incoming and outgoing calls, the Cardo said “rider A disconnected” each time and the little phone handset symbol on the top line of the XT2 main screen disappeared. After the caller disconnected, the XT2 reconnected and the little phone symbol reappeared on the top status line.

It seems that the best way to get it to work (other than smart notifications) is to connect using my original method using the XT2 as the central hub and control everything through that. Phone <> XT2 <> headset.

I am going to clear/factory reset everything again and uninstall/reinstall the Tread app then make further tests.

I experienced the same problem. When I first got the XT2 and installed Tread on my iPhone, Smart notification worked without any problem, but I decided tho turn it off since I didn’t think I needed it. Later I changed my mined and tried to turn it back on but couldn’t find an easy way to do so. In the end I uninstalled Tread and reinstalled it again and now notifications works againe.

I think that when you connect a phone you have to scan the QR code that is displayed by the XT2.

I did manage to do it once without scanning, but I haver not been able to do it since.
Always start off by forgetting the devices already connected - even if you are reconnecting the same device. So forget / unpair the XT2 on the phone. Forget the phone on the XT2. Start again.

Even doing a master reset and forgetting all the bluetooth devices in XT2/Phone and Cardo, the problem occurs after a while. Especially with calls, when you have been calling for 1 minute or more, the Bluetooth connection is interrupted and you stop hearing through the headphones. It is important to send the details to technical support for all users.

I wasn't suggesting that turning the unit off and then on again - a matter of a few seconds - cured the issue.

It just reactivated BT and it stayed active - until the next phone call, which worked for the duration of the call, but disconnected again when the call was over. Repeat. I dont get many phone calls, so its not much of an issue.
