Powered mount

Post by Nortoncommando »

When I charge the XT with the cord in back it charges up and works normally. It will not charge on the powered mount, goes dim and shuts off when the battery runs down. the pins on the powered mount are showing 12V. If it is off and I plug it in to the powered mount it turns on, but it ins not charging.
any thoughts, recommendations?

The voltage coming from the mount should be 5 volts.

You should never see 12V at the XT mount pins. The small box on the cord should be dropping the 12V vehicle voltage down to 5V.

Is there a mix of XT and XT2 here? The XT mount is 5V. The XT2 mount is 12V.
The XT2 can be used in an XT mount, with some limitations due to insufficient power.
The XT can not be used in an XT2 mount.

Are you sure that you've opened a new(!) XT2?

Only a Zumo XT(1) should have a 'little box' in the cable - it transforms the normal 12V of a motorbike to 5V. The Zumo XT2 normally uses 12V and could also handle the 'old' mount of the Zumo XT(1) with 5V...

Great question :-). I was posting from work and when I got home I looked, and it is an XT not an XT2 :-).

the motorcycle mount power cable is not charging your XT because I think the amps are not high enough

https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=4 ... tab=topics
When the zūmo XT IS connected to the motorcycle charging mount, the current draw is Input: 10-30V, 1.5A (max) Output: 4.8-5.5V, 1.5A.

I think the XT battery charges up when amps are above 2.1amps like when using a 2.1amp usb wall charger

to my knowledge. that 1.5A output on the motorcycle power mount is just to power the XT screen and not high enough amps to charge up the internal XT battery

I have mine plugged into a normal PC USB port and the battery seems to be fully charged when I unplug it.

@twowheelstom - on our motorcycle holidays we normally drive from 9:30am to approximately 04:00pm through the southern italy alps. When we start, the Zumo XT is fully loaded and when we stop and i disconnect the Zumo XT, it's also fully loaded...

So i think it already charges also when in the motorcycle mount...

@willbird - Hopefully not on the bike? It's no good idea to use the 'normal' usb port of the Zumo XT for loading on a running bike! The vibrations likely will harm the usb port after time because of the vibrations...
