Yes I believe they are re-calculated on my 660 and 665. And the maps on the 665 are limited by the memory (or so Garmin says). So, th3 665 is stuck a few years back.
I will keep an eye on the routes on the 660 and 665.

Re: Basecamp No Longer Makes a "Route" Just. A Straight Line
This probably belongs in the 660 section, but just want to point out that I used BC with my 660 for years and it almost always worked just fine for planning long, complex routes. The "compatibility" issue was really mostly about features in BC that are not supported on the 600. But for manual route planning -- the majority of what I use a GPS for -- it worked fine, with rare screwups that were as much due to the 660's "personality" as anything to do with Basecamp.

I had a similar issue pop up over the weekend, and thank goodness I had my iPhone with me to lead me from stop to stop on a 350 mile route I had mapped out in Basecamp. The issue? The route I had created was, (unknowingly to me), in the Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap, instead of NA 26.1. One might think I would have checked this before transferring it to my 595, as the same issue popped up in early March, but no... Not sure if I can default to always using a certain map in Basecamp, but if there is not, I just have to remember to always check.
