I edited a route this morning..and in the process ended up with the routes in 2 sections..when I highlight the first section of the route it doesn't highlight the whole route, only the first part. The same is true when I highlight the 2nd half of the route.
How do I combine the 2 halves of the route into one route?

If you highlight the two routes (Lft. click + Ctrl) then rt. click on one, you will get the option to join the selected routes. Away you go
